Do You Accessorize?

So I saw a post by Miss G Chic at Fashion Love Affair that had a veiled headband from Nordstrom that I instantly fell in love with. I went to buy it, only to find it's an online only purchase :-( But, I was able to get another headband that was feathered. Anywho, the post got me thinking. Headbands do wonders for my style in general. It just seems to SET IT OFF. The headband doesn't even have to be extravagant, it can be a simple black headband. What do you guys where that gives your hair that extra oomph?

Hey RED!

Hey red! Hey red! I have heard this comment so many times in my life, and most times my hair wasn't even red. For those who know me, you know I have dyed my hair red numerous times. Whether is was using the temporary jazzings to add a cherry cola tint that you can only see in the sun, or if it was my Charlie Baltimore red, where I got it bleached first then dyed, RED has been my color. Previously, I always had relaxed hair when it was dyed. And for those who have been through this process, you know it looks and feels great the first 4-6 weeks until you have to go in and get that relaxer. Man, it use to be a painful event. After the relaxer was in, while at the shampoo bowl, I knew that my hair would shed, well more than shed, break off. Every time, so much hair would come out that I would swear I had a bald spot, but because my hair is super thick it never was. It just appeared slightly thinner.

This was my first time coloring my hair while "natural." I got it dyed, but at first, it was not the color I wanted. It looked more copper than the bloody red I wanted. I looked a little washed out, or as my best friend said...I looked albino. So we tried again the next day. It got closer to the red that I was going for, but still not right on. I like it though. I do feel like it has changed the texture of my hair. It feels more brittle, but I guess it means I need to moisturize more often. I've worn it both in an Afro and flat ironed, and I do like!.......More details to come.

Missing You

I've been wearing my hair straight for a little over two weeks. I woke up today and looked in the mirror and realized I really miss my fro. I'm actually going to wash it in a few and wear the wash and go for a few days before I twist it up. I'm going home in a couple of days, and I need to make a decision on how I want to wear it. I was thinking about flat ironing again, but only because I plan to get color, and it may be easier to apply with straight hair. What do you guys think? I know if I do wear it straight first, immediately after I get the color, I'm definitely rocking the fro so my family can see it in person. They haven't seen it yet! Well, not in person at least. By the way, I'm going red! Watch out now! But anyway, when I woke up and realized how much I missed my curls, I knew I had made the right decision of going natural. I tend to go back and forth some days where I wonder should I have kept my relaxer. But today, I am glad that I did what I did!

Definitely Fierce

As I go through this natural hair journey it's always encouraging to read what others have written, and look at what has worked for them. My girl Miss G Chic over at Fierce by Nature wrote in her blog about curlformers. I had never heard anything about them until she put me up on game :-) I'm not exactly sure how it works, but there is a demo video on how to use the curlformers on youtube. Yall know I'm a product junkie, so this may be the next investment. Miss G Chic's results were really cute, so I may just give it a try. I haven't had spirals in years. Plus I can imagine it being cute even if you decide to comb out the spirals to make them looser. Feel free to leave comments about your journey, and what hair styles have worked for you......More details to come

Length Check

So it has been about 6 weeks since I flat ironed my hair last. I did some research online about which flat irons worked best on unrelaxed African American hair. All signs pointed to the Sedu Revolution Pro Nano Ceramic Tourmaline 1 inch flat iron. So I bought it. Ran me about $100, but I figured it would be a good investment. It was! I did my regular wash and condition then I detangled with Paul Mitchell leave-in conditioner. I blow dried right away….If I let it dry first, it’s so hard to get the blow dryer through it :-) But anyway, it took about 2 hours to get it all straightened (granted, I was watching tv and skyping it up with the “roomie” but this is why I don’t flat iron as often). It turned out great though. It came out really straight. The flat iron is slender ANDDDD I got caught in a little rain the next day and it didn’t puff up. I did use a heat protectant this time, which is something I normally don’t do. It has really grown; it is almost back to the length that it used to be when I had my last relaxer….I plan to post a blog about the specific products I use, I’m a definite product junkie….More details to come

F the Negativity

So for the past couple of months I have been met with positive feedback about the way I choose to wear my hair. But of course along with the good comes some bad. The negativity: oh why are you doing this, you don't look as good, you need a perm, your hair is so short, I liked it better when it was long etc etc. Sometimes it got to the point where I would second guess myself....Like man, did I look better with relaxed hair? But I had to remind myself that I did not decide to go natural for anyone else but me, therefore no one else has to be please with my decisions but me. I love my hair the way it is now. Of course I go through my ups and downs about the way it's styled, but for the most part, I love it. So with that, I would say to all my natural Ladies......F the negativity.......Forget about it that is. Forget those who try to bring you down, or say things in order make it seem that being natural is being less beautiful. As a matter of fact, this isn't just for women who have natural hair. This is for people in general! No one has to live your life but you. Stand firm behind your decisions. Know that going through ups and downs is a natural part of life. So regardless of how I decide to wear my hair, whether I want to continue to let my hair grow naturally, or lock it up, or even if I decide to relax my hair again, it's my choice, and I stand firmly behind it............More details to come

Afro

Before I start, I want to thank all of the viewers! You guys made me have 300 + views in my first month! Thanks so much! Anywhoo, back to hair.

Ok, so I tried to do something different. Instead of my normal plait twist out, I tried what I talked about earlier which is sistercurls, where you twist your hair straight back while it is wet and then let dry. It did not turn out well. There was not a lot of curl definition and it only lasted a day :-( But.....I was able to turn it into a Afro. I'm not sure if I should rock it outside or not, so I thought I would let yall be the judge.....More details to come
